Every summer, Bat World MidCities becomes home to over 100 orphaned bats from across Texas. Each of these babies is hand-fed a custom milk formula up to five times per day, in addition to receiving medical care as needed. They are housed in incubators designed to keep them warm while they grow. Sponsorships enable us to purchase the ingredients for the milk formula, cover medical expenses, and maintain the incubators that are critical for their survival. Sponsors receive a species profile, a photo of one or more of our orphans and a certificate of sponsorship.
$20.00Each year in the fall, dozens of displaced adult bats arrive at Bat World MidCities in need of care over the winter. Each bat is assessed for injuries and overall condition, and receives medical care as appropriate in addition to being hand-fed two to three times per day until they reach an optimal weight for winter. Species that would normally hibernate are then acclimated to a habitat that will support their physiological needs while allowing caregivers to check them daily to ensure they are maintaining appropriate weight and hydration; any bat that is not in optimal condition is gently roused, hydrated, and fed before being returned to the hibernation chamber. In spring, when temperatures have reached at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit overnight and nighttime flying insects are visible, the bats are moved to an outdoor flight enclosure and observed to ensure they are able to fly well. Within a few days to a week, they are ready for release. Sponsoring our winter bats enables us to provide them with proper food, necessary medications, and appropriate housing for the winter season, as well as a spacious outdoor flight enclosure for pre-release conditioning. Sponsors receive a certificate of sponsorship, species profile, and a photo of one or more of our winter bats.
