In this 2-hour live virtual workshop, participants will learn about the most common injuries we see in insectivorous bats as well as considerations for treatment. This course is approved by the Texas Dept. of State Health Services for 2 CE hours for Texas Animal Control officers. The $29 course fee includes the live virtual workshop, participant guide, and additional resource materials.
Insectivorous bats are among the most complicated small mammals we see in wildlife rehabilitation. Because they are tiny and fragile, and because they use true powered flight to move, they present with injuries which we do not see with any other small mammal species. Their metabolic rate means that medications must be dosed and administered differently. As a rabies vector species, they must be handled carefully by trained, vaccinated individuals.
In this workshop, we will examine the most common types of injuries we see in bat rehabilitation, and review the various treatment options available to us. This workshop is not intended to replace hands-on, face to face training, but rather to acquaint the rehabilitator with different types of injuries so they may be better equipped to identify them.
Before we begin to investigate these common injuries, it is important to remember that only trained rehabilitators who have been vaccinated for rabies should handle bats. Appropriate PPE, including gloves, should be worn at all times, and quarantine protocols must be followed.
