Pregnancy, birth, and pup care make summertime especially challenging for bat rehabilitators. Regardless of where in the world we are, bats have babies in late spring through mid-summer, and pregnant bats often get into trouble in the wild. Pregnant and lactating females require extra attention to ensure they are healthy enough to raise their young. Pups with their mothers must be monitored for dehydration and to be sure they are nursing properly. Depending on the species, orphaned bats may need to be groomed multiple times per day. In this course, we will explore the nuances of maternity care for insectivorous bats, including pregnancy, birth, birthing complications, post-natal care, and pup care.
